Mistake # 7: Not trusting my first instinct

By Stovall Weems

As I encounter situations, many times I have an immediate, instinctive judgment which directs me to go in a certain direction or evaluate that situation one way. However, many times I made the mistake of not following that instinctive judgment and I would allow myself to be talked out of it, or would even talk myself out of it for one reason or another. Nearly every time this happened, we had to suffer unnecessary energy drains and we’d actually end up circling back around to what I first felt intuitively.

Nearly all of our decisions are team lead and team oriented, and it’s important to have healthy discussion and get feedback. However, there will be times when things are moving so fast that the senior leader must make a decision based on his intuitive “gut instinct”. Let me be very clear – no team member carries the equal burden of moving the church forward like the senior pastor does. If there is a prompting of what lies ahead or of a potential challenge, it’s so important to follow that prompting. This is intuitive leadership that comes from following God.

You are correct ! The Burden is carried by the Senior Pastor/ Senior Member. Eventhough that we sometimes agree on some descisions that other people make we as leaders are responsible for the outcome, good and /or bad. It is totally awesome that most situation are decided as a team in this Church.
As a member of this Church for the last 4 years or so , and by the “FRUIT” that this Church have produced in the live’s of Individuals as in the community I don’t think many “wrong” decisions were made. Do what your doing Pastor !, keep taking advice from the senior staff, gather all imput and walk away into a quiet room and ask God to Help you with the correct course of action on the situation at hand, and 99% of the time that gut feeling will be right! I say 99% because no one is perfect ! LOL
Keep doing what you are doing Pastor Stovall, we as a Church and with your God given wisdom, we are headed in the right direction !!!

    SOMEBODY CALL SOMEBODY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Amen!

We are followers of Christ and the “GUT” is the Holy Spirit telling us NO! NO! NO!

We get tired of going around those mountains. I don’t want to have to spend 40 years in the wilderness when I could have gone to the promise land much faster!

WORD! It’s good to “go with the Ghost!” Thanks for being so focused on listening to God’s leading, and in turn leading our Church. You make it look easy. :)

Man!! That is so good Pastor. As you pointed out, I think we often know which direction we should move in as a result of spending time with God, but maybe aren’t able to articulate to others why we feel so strongly. Often times we allow the doubt of others or their thoughtful arguments to be an excuse for us to lay down the authority God has placed on us and the responsibilities that come with it. Thanks for your continued transparency, you are a truly great leader.

Pastor Stovall-I think I speak for a lot of people when I say thank you for speaking your heart and gut instinct- not only with churchwide decisions to move forward, but also with people on a one to one basis.
Personally, my life was forever altered when I was a 28 year old bachelor in 2003 -you gave me an ‘instinctive judgment’ that changed my course, led me into agreement, alignment, assignment that forever changed me.
