Difficult Conversations

By David Branker

I don’t know about you, but the thought of needing to have a difficult conversation with someone, whether it’s a co-worker, a family member, a friend, or even an acquaintance can be daunting. How do I possibly find the right words to say? Will the conversation be received correctly or is it going to end in a bigger mess? Truth is, I have discovered that the best thing I can do is to first get my heart right. Get my heart right with God, and right with God about the person. Interestingly enough, when the heart is right the right words follow. The scripture reminds us that, “Whatever is in your heart determines what you say.” Luke 6:45b NLT

So, before you struggle with the words, prepare your heart and watch this principle at work in your life. Have you been avoiding a difficult conversation? It’s time to talk.

How to Overcome

By Stovall Weems

Many times the way to overcome is to simply outlast. Outlast your trials, outlast your critics, and outlast the devil. Show up and outlast! Hang in there, believe God and don’t give up.

Discover the Joy of Discipline

By Stovall Weems

Discover the joy of discipline.

Discipline is simply investing in the right things so that you can accomplish what you want in life.  You can pay now with discipline or pay later with regret.  You will pay either way.

Are You Living the Intentional Life?

By Stovall Weems

Are you living life through a filter of reaction or are you being intentional about the way you live? Sure many of us have put God first and want God’s will for our lives, but are we choosing well when it comes to what we are willing to invest our energy in?  Make sure that WHAT you are doing is taking you WHERE you are supposed to be going.

Need a Pick-Me-Up

By David Branker

Mark 10:47-52a   “When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Jesus stopped and said, ‘Call him.’ So they called to the blind man, ‘Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.‘  Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. What do you want me to do for you?’ Jesus asked him.  The blind man said, ‘Rabbi, I want to see.’  ‘Go.’ said Jesus, ‘your faith has healed you.’” NIV

In the midst of the crowd and noise, a blind man gets Jesus’ attention. He cries out and literally stops Jesus in his tracks. What stands out is how Jesus’ disciples first responded to the man. They said, “Cheer up! On your feet!” Something you say to someone who is discouraged and down and in need of a “pick-me-up.” You see, this man was clearly in distress. Obviously he was blind and need of healing, but they first answered his emotional distress. This time, the disciples represented Jesus well. They observed the person, not just his problem.

In order to resolve the problems we deal with at work, or at home, sometimes we must first recognize and acknowledge the toll it is having on those we lead and live with. We can hear it in their voices; other times, we can see it hidden behind their faint smiles. Whatever the case, as you lead today, listen, observe and respond. Not just to the problem, but first to the person. It may make all the difference in their world.

Who do you need to cheer on today?

Are They Heard?

By David Branker

Matthew 21:15-16 The leading priests and the teachers of religious law saw these wonderful miracles and heard even the children in the Temple shouting, “Praise God for the Son of David.” But the leaders were indignant. They asked Jesus, “Do you hear what these children are saying?” “Yes,” Jesus replied. “Haven’t you ever read the Scriptures? For they say, ‘You have taught children and infants to give you praise.’” NLT

How fitting. This is the passage where Jesus is reestablishing order in the temple. Jesus has just cleansed the temple; the blind and lame are brought to him and are healed. Yet, in the midst of all of these miracles something even more remarkable is happening. The children break out in praise. Notice, the response of the religious, self-centered leaders – “So the religious leaders’ inquired. “Do you hear what these children are saying?” Jesus answers “Yes.” When the children praised, it got Jesus’ attention and affirmation.

You see – God’s House should always be a place where the voices of the next generation are heard and their presence celebrated. In His house, they should not only be taught about God, but they should have an opportunity to experience Him for themselves. Praise always follows a touch from above.

Question: Has the next generation been relegated to a side room or are their voices being heard in our churches? What would be said of us?
